Volunteer Corner

As a Volunteer for an Eastern Biologix research program, you are exercising your choice to donate samples, such as blood and tissue, for medical research.  Medical researchers use samples to find new and better treatments for patients.  Before you make your decision about donating, it is important that you understand what donation is, how it works, and that samples can only be taken from you via your own consent.

What Are Samples?

Samples (also called biospecimens) include materials from your body which you donate to research, such as tissue, blood, skin, hair, saliva, and urine.

You may choose to donate samples that are collected during a medical procedure which you are undergoing.  Often parts of your samples remain after your doctor uses what he or she needs for medical tests, and often these remaining parts are destroyed.  But through your consent, samples that aren’t needed for your medical care can be used for research. You will not need to have an additional procedure for this type of donation.

In some cases, you may choose to donate samples through a procedure that is not related to your medical care, such as a blood draw or saliva swab.

In all cases, samples taken from your body will be used for research purposes only.

Who Donates?

People from all backgrounds and communities donate samples.

Why Should I Donate?

Be a part of cutting-edge research to find cures for disease!  Researchers use your samples, along with samples from thousands of other patients, to look for ways to prevent and/or treat health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.  Donating is a way that some patients cope with their disease.  It also helps some families cope with the challenge of having a loved one who is sick.  Many people find comfort knowing that by donating samples, they will help researchers make discoveries that can advance medicine and improve the treatment of others in their community.

Where Can I Donate?

EASTERN BIOLOGIX has developed a top-tier network of medical clinics and labs throughout Romania, which serve as sample collection points for Volunteer donors.

We are currently focused on the collection of samples from human blood.

As a Volunteer, you will be asked to undergo a routine blood draw (phlebotomy) to obtain samples in one of our partner medical clinics. These samples can be obtained as part of your other medical tests, or through a procedure that is not related to your medical care.  In all cases, samples donated by you will be used for research purposes only.

How it works:

  1. You will be provided a Volunteer Consent Form which will explain in detail all aspects of the blood donation procedure.
  2. Blood samples consist of 2 to 4, 10 ml vials, taken from you at the same time (same needle) as other blood tests you may be undergoing.
  3. There will be NO monetary costs to you for volunteering to provide blood samples.
  4. Your privacy will be highly protected, as all personal information is de-identified prior to submitting samples to research institutions.  Your address, phone number, CNP and anything else that could identify you will be removed before the records are sent to the researcher.  The specimens provided to researchers are anonymous, that is they are not labeled with your personal information, only with an Eastern Biologix code number.
  5. You can change your mind anytime, and you have the right to withdraw your samples and information that have not yet been used in any research.
  6. Research institutes will never contact you, and you will not be identified in any reports or publications resulting from research studies.
  7. By donating your blood, you will contribute to medical research which may help find cures to diseases.
